Position Summary / Career Interest:

This position performs respiratory functions associated with the education of Home Medical Equipment (HME) products to patients using ventilators, PAP therapy, home oxygen and other respiratory equipment. This position will provide assessments of the patients and communication to physicians, other departments, and HME team members.


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Promote a continuous quality improvement and customer service effort to enhance the services provided to
  • Internal and external customers.
  • Coordinates delivery of and instructs customers on the use of Home Medical Equipment, primarily Respiratory Equipment.  Evaluates clients’ medical requirements and places appropriate equipment to meet the customer needs at home.  Discusses Medicare and Insurance requirements and coverage with client's families, physicians and other parties concerned.
  • Maintains a patient-centered focus and strives to support the mission, goals, and values of the hospital, department, and division.
  • Follows policies, procedures, and HME department standards. Interacts with physicians and other health system staff to provide quality, safe, and efficient care for the patient/customer.
  • Maintains positive working relations with customers. Demonstrates mature, sensitive, and effective communications with all age groups, especially under high levels of stress.
  • Initiates, schedules, and completes follow-up phone calls, assessments, and home visits.
  • Handle HME incoming telephone calls ensuring positive patient experiences.
  • Maintain and/or enter patient account profile information and accurate referral source data.
  • Completes plans of care and assessment documentation, making appropriate updates and revisions with changes, when applicable.
  • Properly performs and documents clinical respiratory services/assessments, including pulse oximetry and other respiratory-related assessments (spot-checks, conserving device evaluations, pulse, etc.), as prescribed
  • Obtains necessary medical documentation prior to claim HME submission.
  • Trained to troubleshoot HME equipment to resolved patient issues.
  • Develops and maintains working knowledge of current HME products and services
  • Responsive to after-hours emergencies and deliveries of equipment and supplies.  On Call is required.
  • Greet HME retail customers quickly and professionally, answering inquiries, completing sales at the front cash register.
  • Assist in implementing and maintaining current and effective tools, automation, services, and programming in
  • all assigned HME areas to meet and enhance system goals.
  • Ensure proper HME inventory control and purchasing procedures.
  • Responsible for adherence for accreditation standards.
  • Knowledge of, and maintains compliance with, Medicare and other payers’ requirements for billing and dispensing HME products.
  • Knowledgeable about AARC Clinical Practice Guidelines and industry practices related to sleep therapy, oxygen and ventilation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or leadership.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Graduate or GED.
  • Associates Degree in respiratory care (or military training program).


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Master's Degree in Respiratory Care or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Bachelors Degree in Respiratory Care or related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Respiratory therapy work experience, particularly in the home medical equipment field.


Required Licensure and Certification

  • Licensed Respiratory Therapist (RT) - State Board of Healing Arts from the state of Kansas State Board of Healing Arts and willing to be credentialed in other US states as well.
  • RRT or CRT credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
  • Valid state-issued driver's license.
  • Certified in ACLS and PALS/NRP within 6 months of hire into role.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) within 30 Days


Required Language Skills

  • Fluent English - Fluent in English with advanced communication skills.


Knowledge Requirements

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft applications.
  • Must have familiarity with Lean concepts and processes.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle and prioritize multiple, competing tasks and demands.
  • Experience with Brightree Software preferred.
  • Additional respiratory therapy education preferred.
