Position Summary / Career Interest:

Mid Shift 11-11 Day and Night Shift Part time and Full time available The Triage Nurse Coordinator actively and continuously assesses and directs the clinical placement of inpatients working collaboratively with all patient care areas within the Hospital as well as the Admitting Department, Patient Relations, Environmental Services, Patient Transport and the Transfer Center. This position oversees the clinical flow and throughput across the organization with a focus on the efficient and effective assignment of patients to maximize quality and service to all patients and families.


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Provides clinical triage and decision-making regarding patient placement in collaboration with all key stakeholders and activates appropriate response teams as needed.
  • Exhibits excellent customer relationship skills, including telephone and personal contact with all internal and external customer groups, i.e., referral hospitals, clinics, physicians and their office staffs, EMS, etc.
  • Collaborates with placement to monitor house wide status of all patient throughput activity including activity in Admitting, Emergency Department, outpatient clinics, inpatient units, perioperative and procedural areas and Transfer Center.
  • Maintains and reports metrics related to efficiency and effectiveness of transfer center and throughput including basic data collection and report writing and specific case reviews.
  • Knowledge and compliance with regulatory requirements specific to EMT ALA.
  • Participates in financial clearance and utilization review assessments for appropriate populations.
  • Identifies and service issues and escalates appropriately to ensure follow-up and satisfaction resolution.
  • Establishes and maintains a high degree of awareness and knowledge of The University of Kansas Hospital System resources, medical staff, services, and specialty services.
  • Establishes and maintains a high degree of awareness and knowledge of referral patterns and referring facility resources.
  • Provides orientation and education to new staff physicians, leaders, and learners regarding the transfer center.
  • Ability to function calmly in stressful situations.
  • Basic personal computer skills.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • Associate Degree Nursing
  • 2 or more years RN critical care or Emergency Room experience with The University of Kansas Health System.


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor Degree Nursing
  • 5 or more years RN critical care or Emergency Room experience.


Required Licensure and Certification

  • Licensed Registered Nurse (LRN) - Single State - State Board of Nursing Registered Nurse in the State of Kansas


Knowledge Requirements

  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office Applications such as Word and Excel.
