Position Summary / Career Interest:
The Histology Technical Specialist will perform all routine histologic procedures including: 1) Grossing/Fixation, 2) Processing, 3) Embedding, 4) Sectioning, 5) Staining, and 6) Immunohistochemical and Molecular procedures. In addition to performing routine histology, will be responsible for the immunohistologic and molecular procedures performed in the laboratory. Will be responsible for proficiency testing, writing procedures, training new employees in the IHC section, and ensuring billing is completed timely and accurately. Will participate in regulatory inspections and development of policies and procedures in the immunohistochemistry section.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
- Accurately prepares, labels, and stores reagents, controls, and specimens for analysis.
- Performs validation studies.
- Identifies opportunities to implement new clinical tests.
- Assists with departmental management tasks including, but not limited to the following: A) Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and reagents to ensure no interruptions in service; B) Coordinates section staffing as assigned; C) Participates in departmental billing and financial planning; D) Contributes to content included in competency training and review.
- Trains and orients new employees to the department.
- Demonstrates technical competence with LIS, EMR and PC.
- Disposes of bio-hazardous materials, chemical waste, sharps, and other potentially hazardous materials according to policy.
- Follows regulatory, accreditation, safety and hospital standards. Adheres to all policies and procedures.
- Participates in inspection readiness. -
- Is able to perform immunohistochemistry assays using various instruments.
- Maintains, operates, troubleshoots instrumentation issues and completes appropriate documentation.
- Orients tissue samples during embedding process, performs microtomy, stains tissue samples, performs histochemical stains, coverslipping and case assembly.
- Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
- Participates in proficiency testing and records results in a timely manner according to laboratory policy.
- Uses and wears PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as necessary to perform job duties safely and minimize risk.
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
- High School Graduate
- Bachelors Degree OR
- Qualify to perform high complexity testing as defined by CLIA 88 regulations. This includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent with a minimum of 24 semester hours of science courses including 6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology and 12 hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
Preferred Education and Experience
- 3 or more years of histology experience
- Pervious experience in immunohistochemistry
Required Licensure and Certification
- Histotechnologist (HTL) - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP)
Knowledge Requirements
- Computer knowledge including understanding of internet.
