Position Summary / Career Interest:

The Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) Technical Quality Educator position assists the Sonography Supervisor with the orientation of new sonographers and oversees image quality within the assigned Ultrasound Division in support of high standards recognized by The University of Kansas Health System. This position participates in staff mentoring, performance improvement and research initiatives.


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

  • Must be able to perform at a high level the professional, clinical and or technical competencies established by departmental protocols and ACR guidelines of the assigned area.
  • Capable of working all shifts and sites in area of expertise.
  • Performs QA and QC of equipment optimization and execution of exam protocols.
  • Proactively monitors ACR guideline for changes and assists with ACR submission for accreditation and/or reaccreditation of ultrasound sites.
  • Organizes and oversees new employee orientation.
  • Provides follow-up training and competency check off.
  • Assures processes are in place for documentation of orientation and other educational activities, and employee files meet hospital and regulatory requirements.
  • Supports performance improvement initiatives and educates and facilitates performance improvement methodologies.
  • Continual monitoring of departmental quality outcomes through exam audits, informal evaluation, focused feedback, review of data, and observation of sonographer’s exams.
  • Facilitates ongoing unit education and professionalism through provision of in-services and CEU opportunities.
  • Assists leadership with student training as needed.
  • Should be observed by staff as a department resource during the absence of leadership.
  • Assists the supervisor, leadership, and section head to develop and update protocols, introduce new technologies and workflows, and provide appropriate education to staff as needed.
  • Actively participates in all aspects of research to include initial review, equipment specifications and protocol development, staff education and scheduling.
  • Properly troubleshoots equipment failures and escalates issues promptly.
  • Actively mentors all staff (including weekend and night staff) in ongoing development of clinical competencies and professionalism behaviors and communication.
  • Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience

  • Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography program which meets requirements by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (A.R.D.M.S.)
  • 3 or more years to 5 years of proven technical competence and expanding leadership accountability in a mid to large size hospital with credible volumes.

  • Bachelors Degree


Required Licensure and Certification

  • Basic Life Support Heartsaver (BLS HS) (Non-Clinical) - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) (AB), (OB/GYN) and (VT)
  • Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) (AB), (OB/GYN) and (VT)
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) Breast (BR) Certification, Breast Imaging (procedures; ABUS) OR
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) Pediatric (PS) Certification; independent performance of all pediatric exams, including spinal canal and dynamic hips) OR
  • Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) - American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) Musculoskeletal credential
    actively and proficiently working in MSK imaging.
