Cardiopulmonary Exercise Physiologist

Position Summary / Career Interest:

The position of Cardiopulmonary Exercise Physiologist uses advanced training and expertise in exercise physiology to perform clinical exercise assessment, advanced clinical exercise testing, and preliminary interpretation of results. The position is responsible for the supervision of exercise testing, facilitating education and competencies for department staff, managing exercise testing equipment, and training. As a leader in the division, the cardiopulmonary exercise physiologist is also responsible for divisional quality maintenance and regulatory readiness, as assigned.


Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions

• Performs testing in accordance with established standards, ACSM guidelines, department policies/protocols, and regulatory requirements. Maintains supplies and equipment per best practice. Obtains patient consent, as needed.
• Analyzes testing for accuracy, assesses results, and provides preliminary interpretation of results.
• Collaborates with referring provider and medical director to ensure optimal testing.
• Responds to emergencies per Health System policy.
• Maintains current knowledge in exercise testing, cardiac arrhythmias, and relevant medications.
• Assist with day-to-day operations of the department and performs pulmonary function testing, as needed.
• Develops, implements, and revises testing policies/procedures/protocols that are patient-centered, evidence based, and encourage high quality and cost-effective care outcomes.
• Develops and maintains a quality improvement/quality assurance program for the department that aligns with Health System policies, regulatory requirements, and national standards.
• Leads or participates in quality improvement work, as needed. Maintains knowledge of current clinical practice, arrhythmias, and medications.
• Oversees quality monitoring and regulatory readiness. Uses findings to improve practice and reduce errors.
• Serves as a resource and technical expert to staff, physicians, and other health care personnel. Effectively represents the department in committees and workgroups.
• Develops and refines training and competency validation for the department.
• Provides effective leadership to the department.
• Demonstrates excellence in personnel management by identifying strengths of team members and assisting employees in leveraging those strengths in their work. Maintains a plan for continued growth.

Required Education and Experience

• Master's Degree Exercise Physiology or PhD in Medical Physiology

Preferred Education and Experience

• 2 or more years Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation or clinical experience

Required Licensure and Certification

• Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS or BCLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) upon Hire
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association (AHA) upon Hire
• Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist (ACSM-CEP) - American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) within 2-years of hire

Preferred Licensure and Certification

• Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) - National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)

Required Language Skills

• Fluent English - Read, write and speak English fluently

Knowledge Requirements

• Proficiency in computer skills with emphasis on Microsoft Office.
• Basic knowledge of electronic health records (preferred proficiency in EPIC)
• May need to drive to other clinical sites
