Position Summary / Career Interest:
Responsible for assisting in the development and coordination of risk management programs designed to reduce the incidence and magnitude of damage claims made against the Hospital. Through the proper combination of casualty and liability insurance, ensures the hospital is adequately protected against financial loss. Collects, analyzes, and reports information pertaining to actual claims and potential liabilities.

Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
- This position is responsible for the oversight, development, and implementation of the clinical risk management program for the organization.
- Responsible for the ongoing implementation of the Hospital Risk Management Plan and annual assessment.
- Maintain close working with the claims and insurance and quality and safety teams.
- Investigate events and circumstances that could lead to financial loss, coordinate activities with claimants, insurance companies and legal counsel as appropriate.
- Prompt notice and reporting of potentially compensable events.
- Review proposed policies, programs, affiliated agreements and other documents and relationships from risk and quality of service perspective, to identify and minimize risk where appropriate.
- Facilitate appropriate analysis, including root case analysis, and development of effective action plans to reduce risk and promote culture of safety.
- Provide communication and education concerning risk related matters.
- Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and protocols to support risk management activities.
- Assist in developing periodic reports for executive leadership, including the board.
- Provide oversight of the collection, analysis, and maintenance of risk related data, monitor trends and the effectiveness of action plans in response to risk reduction strategies.
- Utilize performance improvement strategies to enhance effectiveness of the risk management plan and culture of safety.
- Actively participate in local, state, and national risk management associations.
- Assist in preparation of and maintain budget.
- Participate on various committees as leader, member, and consultant.
- Responsible for professional peer review and quality review activities.
- Ensure timely reporting to state and federal regulatory agencies and licensing boards.
- Provide input to medical staff peer review and credentialing.
- Assure compliance with Kansas Risk Management Statutes and peer review.
- Assist in managing external reporting of events and circumstances.
- Able to skillfully communicate and partner with others via email, telephone and in person.
- Uses time efficiently and effectively. Able to develop and meet project time frames.
- Ability to work effectively from home and onsite.
- Participate in and oversee risk management on-call.
- Responsible for the development and professional growth of the clinical risk management team.
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
- Bachelors Degree in Health Care Administration or Nursing from an accredited college or university.
- Master's Degree in Health Care Administration, Nursing, or MD, or JD from an accredited college or university.
- 5 or more years of experience as Risk Manager in an acute care system or hospital.
- 3 or more years of experience successfully leading and managing team.
Preferred Education and Experience
- Director level experience in clinical risk management.
Knowledge Requirements
- Ability to use phone, communicate one on one and in meetings, participate in internal and external meetings.
- Cognitive skills, attention and memory, reading, writing, a conceptualizing, planning organizing communicating concepts and specific directions.
