The Medical Lab Technical Specialist participates in all departmental responsibilities for comprehensive laboratory testing for patients. This includes ensuring patients laboratory results are accurate, timely and with quality. They are the technical specialist and the domain expert for issues that arise in their assigned area.
Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions
- Serves as subject matter expert for assigned area and assists other employees with questions and issues that arise.
- Analyzes patient, control and proficiency testing specimens and records results in a timely manner according to laboratory policy.
- Coordinates quality assurance and quality improvement activities for the department.
- Follows and ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and maintains a laboratory of constant readiness.
- Follows and ensures compliance with regulatory, accreditation, safety and hospital standard, policies and procedures.
- Instructs, orients and mentors students, employees, residents, patients and other health care providers as applicable.
- Completes continuing education and submits appropriate documentation where applicable.
- Oversees and performs calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting and quality control for instrument issues in addition to the review and management of the appropriate documentation.
- Maintains an adequate inventory of all supplies. Accurately prepares, labels and stores reagents, standards, controls, and specimens for analysis.
- Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.
- Performs phlebotomy and sample collection as needed to support efficiency across the department.
- Performs product preparations in compliance with FDA, cGMP, AABB standards, NRC regulations and department procedures.
- Reviews and correlates results of laboratory tests to each other and with the patient's condition, recognizing abnormal results and critical/alert values. Verifies accuracy of results and initiates corrective action when indicated.
- Uses and wears PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as necessary to perform job duties safely and minimize risk.
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.

Required Education and Experience
- Graduate of a NCCLS approved training program
- Associates Degree
- 2 or more years or related experience
Preferred Education and Experience
- Bachelor of Science
Required Licensure and Certification
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) - American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP) within 180 Days
